Why full synthetic oil

And how to skip the $140 dealer trip without losing the protection.

$900+

saved over the first 100,000 miles vs conventional

7,500 mi

standard interval — vs 3,000 mi for conventional

75%

of engine wear happens at cold start. Synthetic flows faster.

Why synthetic beats conventional

Molecular consistency

Synthetic oil is uniformly engineered. Conventional oil has varying molecule sizes and breaks down faster.

Longer intervals

7,500–10,000 mi (synthetic) vs 3,000–5,000 mi (conventional). Fewer changes = less waste, less cost.

High-temp stability

Synthetic holds viscosity at high temperatures. Modern turbocharged engines run hotter than older NA engines.

Cold-start protection

Synthetic flows better at start-up — about 75% of engine wear happens in the first 10 seconds.

Reduced sludge

Synthetic resists oxidation. Detergents stay active longer and the engine stays cleaner inside.

Myths busted

"Conventional is fine in older cars"

True for pre-2000 cars whose seals were designed for conventional. ALL modern cars (post-2003 roughly) ship with synthetic-compatible seals.

"Once you switch to synthetic you can't go back"

False. You can switch freely either direction. It's just oil.

"Synthetic causes leaks"

Old myth from the 70s when early synthetics had compatibility issues. Modern synthetic blends do not cause new leaks. They can REVEAL existing leaks because synthetic flows better through small gaps — but the leak was already there.
