The five rules
- Never insult the car.Insult the market. “Similar ones are going for X” beats “your car has problems.”
- Anchor low, but with a reason. Bring a comp. Show your work.
- Be friendly, never desperate. Time is your leverage.
- Cash + same-day pickup is a 3× multiplier. Have it ready.
- If they won’t move 10% in 10 days, walk. There’s another car next week.

Hey — saw your listing for the [year make model]. Looks like a clean car. I'm a serious buyer with cash, and I'm ready to come look at it this weekend. Quick question first — would you take $[offer] if I can pick it up Saturday with cash in hand?
Response to "firm on price"
Totally understand. I've been watching a few similar [model]s in the area and the recent ones are closing around $[market avg]. I know yours has [feature], which is a nice bump. Would you meet me at $[mid offer]?
Response to "I have other offers"
Appreciate you being upfront. I'm cash-ready and can be there with the title work in hand on [day]. If those other offers fall through, my $[offer] is on the table for the next 48 hours. Just text me.
Final offer / walk away
Hey, I think we're not going to land in the same place. My final number is $[walk away] cash this weekend. If that doesn't work for you, no hard feelings — best of luck with the sale.
Cash vs Zelle vs Venmo
Cash + Zelle is the safest combo. Avoid large Venmo payments — easily reversible and not designed for vehicle transactions. Cashier’s checks have been weaponized in too many scams to trust without same-bank verification.
